Faces of Fanny’s: Tim!

Welcome back to our Faces of Fanny’s series, where we shine a light on the folks who make Fanny’s the Fanny’s we know and love! Today, we talk to drum instructor, Tim Clo!

Welcome, Tim! Can you tell us a little about how you first got connected to Fanny’s?

It was 2009. I lived one block away and was super excited that a music store was opening up so close! I loved chatting with P. and Leigh and discussed how I used to manage a music store in Miami and taught drum lessons. They were looking to expand the times they could offer drums, and while I wasn’t planning on teaching again, it was too perfect to pass up!

What would it have meant for you to have had access to a place like Fanny’s as a kid or teen?

I often tell my students how lucky they are to have this experience. I totally wish I could have had one-on-one lessons in shop like Fanny’s. I’m certain I would be a better drummer today.

Tell us a little bit about how and where you learned to play your instrument.

Mostly self-taught. I was always drawn to the drums. I would use pencils on pillows. I got a decent toy kit around age 7 or 8 and I played along to my KISS records. I’m sad there is not a single picture of me playing back then. One day, the older neighborhood kids convinced me (bullied me?) to let them smash it and throw it down a hill. I guess that was pretty rock-n-roll. I then played drums in the school concert and marching bands, and the jazz band in college.

What do you love most about being a part of theFanny’s family?

I love when I’m surrounded by good people! My Fanny-fam is the best!

As a fellow music teacher, I am curious: what phrases do you find yourself saying to your students the most?

“I like that beat you’re playing. It’s not exactly the one I’m trying to get you play this time, so let’s keep trying.”

What are your favorite brands to play on your respective instrument?

Since my primary live gig is with a Rolling Stones tribute band, I needed a cool Gretsch kit.
